The best year for a used Honda CR-V is 2019 to 2022. Those cars sit at the end of the fifth generation, which means the 1.5-liter turbo engine had several years of running changes behind it, Honda Sensing driver aids were standard on every trim, and the interior is recent enough that nothing about it feels old.
Buying newer, the 2023 and up sixth generation is a bigger and quieter vehicle with a far better screen. Buying older, a 2015 or 2016 CR-V is one of the best values on the used market right now if the service history is clean.

Honda made the CR-V longer for 2023 and put most of that length into the back seat and the cargo floor. It is the first CR-V that a six-foot adult can sit behind another six-foot adult in without negotiating. The ride is noticeably quieter at 70 mph, which matters if your week includes I-65 down to Alabaster or a run out I-20.
The screen is the other big change. Earlier CR-Vs used a small display that aged badly. The sixth generation moved to a cleaner 7-inch unit, with a 9-inch screen and wireless Apple CarPlay on higher trims. The hybrid is the one to drive first. The EPA rates the 2023 front-drive hybrid at 43 mpg city and 40 mpg combined, which is minivan-money savings on a daily commute.
A 2019 to 2022 CR-V is the best mix of price, features and known-good engineering on the lot.
This is the generation that made the CR-V the default answer for a two-car family. Cargo space jumped, the rear doors open wide enough to load a car seat without a shoulder injury, and from 2018 forward every single trim came with Honda Sensing, which bundles adaptive cruise, lane keeping and collision braking. On Hwy 280 in stop-and-go afternoon traffic, adaptive cruise stops being a gadget and starts being the reason you arrive less annoyed.
The 1.5-liter turbo deserves a straight answer rather than a rumor. On early 2017 and 2018 cars, some owners in genuinely cold states reported gasoline collecting in the engine oil during repeated short trips in freezing weather. Honda issued a software and hardware update for it. Birmingham does not produce those conditions, and nearly every affected car has had the update by now. Ask for the service record, check the oil, and move on.

Honda refreshed the CR-V for 2015 with a direct-injection 2.4-liter engine and a CVT, which pushed EPA combined economy to 29 mpg from 26. A clean 2015 or 2016 CR-V does almost everything a 2019 does for meaningfully less money. It is a genuinely good answer for a first car for a new driver, or a second vehicle that mostly runs errands around Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook.
Earlier 2012 to 2014 cars use a conventional five-speed automatic instead of a CVT. Some buyers prefer that, and there is nothing wrong with it. The trade is fuel economy and a plainer interior. At this age, the car matters less than the paperwork. A well-kept 2013 with records beats a neglected 2016 every time.
