Pre-Purchase Inspection on a Used Car

An hour of a mechanic's time before you buy is the cheapest thing you will ever spend on a used car. Here is what that hour actually covers, what it costs, and the one situation where you can skip it.

The Short Version

A pre-purchase inspection is an independent mechanic going over one specific used car, on a lift, before you buy it. You pay for it. You get a written report. Nothing gets fixed and nothing gets guaranteed. What you are buying is information.

Get one on any private-party purchase, full stop. Get one on any dealer car where you cannot tell what reconditioning was done. If a seller will not let a car go to your mechanic, that is your answer about the car.

What a Mechanic Actually Checks

A pre-purchase inspection is not a longer version of your own walkaround. It is a different set of checks entirely, because a lift and a scan tool see things that no test drive around a parking lot will ever surface. On the Lift

This is the part you are really paying for. Half of what determines whether a used car is a good buy lives under it.

  • Frame and unibody for repaired collision damage
  • Active fluid leaks, and the difference between seeping and dripping
  • Suspension bushings, ball joints, and shock condition
  • Exhaust and heat shield rust, which Alabama humidity accelerates
  • Undercarriage corrosion, which matters on any car that spent time north of here

A car with no dashboard light can still be storing fault codes. A mechanic reads them. You cannot.

  • Stored and pending codes across every module, not just the engine
  • Readiness monitors, which reveal whether the computer was recently cleared
  • Transmission adaptation values on cars that report them
  • Airbag and safety-system faults, which do not always light the dash

Measured, Not Guessed

The difference between a real inspection and a friend who is good with cars is a set of numbers instead of opinions.

  • Brake pad thickness in millimeters and rotor condition
  • Tire tread depth at three points across each tire, which exposes alignment wear
  • Battery load test and charging system output
  • Air conditioning vent temperature under load, not just cold air at idle

Fluids and Service State

Fluid condition tells the story the odometer will not.

  • Oil level and condition, including any smell of fuel in the oil
  • Transmission fluid color and smell where the car has a dipstick
  • Coolant condition and any sign of cross-contamination
  • Brake fluid moisture content, a cheap test almost nobody runs

What a Pre-Purchase Inspection Costs

Shops price this as roughly an hour of labor, and the rate varies more between shops than between cars. Call two or three near you and ask for their pre-purchase inspection rate by name. It is a defined service, not a vague once-over.

The honest answer depends on who is selling the car and what they did to it before you got there. We are a dealer, so read the right-hand column with that in mind, then go check the claim yourself.

Always Get One

Private Sellers and Auction-Grade Lots

A private seller owes you nothing after the title changes hands. Alabama has no cooling-off period on a used car sale, so the moment you sign, the car and everything wrong with it are yours.

  • Any Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist purchase
  • Any car sold as-is with no reconditioning described
  • Any lot that cannot tell you what work it performed before listing
  • Any car that was recently registered in a road-salt state
  • Any seller who is in a hurry, which is the oldest signal there is
Usually Redundant

A Car That Was Already Reconditioned

When a dealer has already put the car through a documented inspection and fixed what it found, a second inspection mostly repeats work that is written down. That is the case here.

A History Report Is Not an Inspection

These two things get treated as interchangeable and they answer completely different questions. A history report tells you where the car has been. An inspection tells you what condition it is in right now.

CARFAX reports what somebody reported. Title brands, most insurance claims, and service visits that were actually filed. A fender repaired with cash and no claim never shows up. Neither does a water pump that is weeping but has not failed, or brake pads at three millimeters, or a tire with alignment wear across the inside edge.

What is a pre-purchase inspection?
A pre-purchase inspection is an hour or so of a mechanic's time, paid for by the buyer, spent going over a specific used car before the sale closes. The car goes on a lift so the underside can be seen, the computer is scanned for stored fault codes, fluids and brakes and tires are measured rather than eyeballed, and you get a written report. It is diagnosis, not repair. Nothing is fixed and nothing is guaranteed. You are buying information.
How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost?
Independent shops around the Birmingham metro generally charge somewhere in the range of one hour of shop labor, and specialty or European vehicles usually cost more. Call two or three shops near you and ask for their pre-purchase inspection rate, because the number varies more by shop than by car. Set against the price of a used vehicle it is a small figure, which is the whole argument for doing it on a private-party purchase.
Do I need a pre-purchase inspection if I buy from a dealer?
It depends entirely on what the dealer did before listing the car. A lot that buys at auction and details the car is very different from one that reconditions it. Every vehicle at Driver's Way clears a 240-point inspection and gets reconditioned before it is listed, and the CARFAX comes with it. You are still welcome to take any car we sell to your own mechanic. We have never had a reason to say no to that.
Can I take a used car to my own mechanic before buying it?
Yes, and a seller who refuses has told you something useful. Arrange the shop appointment first so the car is not sitting somewhere for a day, then take it in. If you are buying from us, call the Pelham store at 205-982-8326 and we will work out the timing with you. If a private seller will not let the car leave their driveway, offer to bring a mobile inspection service to them instead.
What does a mechanic check on a pre-purchase inspection?
The parts you cannot see from the seat. On the lift, they look for frame damage, fluid leaks, exhaust and suspension condition, and rust on the underbody. They measure brake pad and rotor thickness and tire tread depth instead of guessing. They scan the computer for stored and pending fault codes, including ones with no dashboard light. They check fluid condition, battery and charging output, and they run the air conditioning to a real temperature reading.
Does a CARFAX report replace an inspection?
No, and it was never meant to. CARFAX reports what got reported: title events, most insurance claims, and service visits that were filed. Damage repaired with cash and no claim never appears. Wear that has not failed yet never appears. Read the history report to learn where the car has been and let the inspection tell you what condition it is in now. They answer two different questions.
