Reliability ratings do not measure what most buyers think they measure. Here is what they actually count, why two sources can disagree about the same car, and the six used models that keep proving it on the road.
The most reliable used cars are the ones you already suspect: Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Mazda and Acura. Across every major ratings source the same badges sit at the top year after year, and that consistency is exactly the signal you want.
The more useful question is what the ratings are counting. Most of them count problems reported, not what those problems cost. A car with an annoying touchscreen can score worse than a car with an expensive transmission. Read the categories, not the headline number.

The default answer, and it earns it. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder is one of the most durable engines built in the last decade, and the 2018 redesign fixed the one real complaint by making the car interesting to drive.
Best Camry Years
The best-selling SUV in the country and the one that holds resale hardest. The hybrid drives its rear wheels with an electric motor, which is a quietly excellent traction system for a wet Alabama spring.
Best RAV4 Years
Roomier in back than the RAV4 and easier to live with on a long drive. The 2019 and newer cars have the turbo engine with its early running changes already sorted, which is why we point most families there.
Best CR-V Years
The Camry's only real rival and the better car to drive. The 2018 and newer generation gets a bigger back seat than the Camry and a hybrid version that returns genuinely serious fuel economy.
Shop Used Sedans
A Camry underneath with a much quieter cabin and a far softer ride. It is the rare luxury car that does not punish you at 90,000 miles, and used examples are the best value in the segment.
Shop Used Lexus
The safest three-row bet on any used lot. The third row is best treated as occasional seating rather than adult space, but the drivetrain record is close to spotless and the hybrid is startlingly efficient for its size.
